How often is my HRV measured?

Apple Watch measures Heart Rate Variability (HRV) a few times per day, not continuously.

These readings happen automatically when your body is calm — during sleep, Mindfulness (Breathe) sessions, or quiet resting periods.

According to Apple’s internal research, HRV data (from short "tachogram" readings) is typically collected every 2–4 hours, depending on movement, battery, and watch fit.

How can I take an HRV reading manually?

You can record an HRV reading anytime using the Mindfulness app on your Apple Watch.
 Here’s how:

  1. Press the Digital Crown to open the App List or Grid View.

  2. Find and tap the Mindfulness app (blue-green icon with a flower pattern).

  3. Choose "Reflect" or "Breathe" — both can trigger HRV measurement.

  4. Sit still, keep your wrist relaxed, and breathe naturally for one minute.

When the session ends, your HRV value (SDNN) will appear later in the
Health app → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate Variability (SDNN).

Why doesn’t my HRV update right away?

It’s normal if the new HRV value doesn’t appear instantly in the Health app. Apple Health sometimes takes a few minutes to sync with your watch.

To make sure it updates properly:

• Keep your watch and iPhone close together

• Make sure Bluetooth and Health permissions are on

• Reopen the Health app after a short wait

What should I keep in mind before measuring?

To get the most accurate HRV results:

• Measure when you feel calm, rested, and relaxed

• Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and exercise right before

• Keep the watch snug but comfortable on your wrist

• Make sure your skin is warm — cold skin can affect sensors

Avoid measuring right after workouts or emotional stress; HRV can temporarily drop and may not reflect your usual balance.
